I love animals an incredible amount; I have always loved them. A lot of it can be accounted to my genetics. My father loves cats and we own two even though he’s allergic. My grandmother used to have an entire horde of stray cats she took care of. Animals have always been something that my family has treasured and loved.
Here in Thailand, there are a lot of stray animals, mostly dogs. Every day my heart breaks a little more as I see all the dogs around the place where I live and the few cats. For two months, I have despaired over not being able to do anything to help them.
Today, I saw a cat for the second time outside a café I frequent. I went out to pet her and when I stood up to leave, I saw the 7 Eleven sign below. A thought hit me, I am not helpless. I can help these creatures. So, I grabbed my wallet and bought her a can of tuna.
Oftentimes we feel helpless. We feel like bad things are happening to us or around us and that there is nothing we can do. But we can. We are not truly helpless.
God talks to us and we can hear him, if we listen closely. I have no doubt that the sign caught my eye because of him. He put this love for animals in my heart for a reason; that reason might not be clear all the time but sometimes it’s like looking through a freshly cleaned window.
Sometimes we may feel like there is nothing we can do; that we have no control over our lives and what happens to us. But if you listen closely, you can hear a voice that is trying to help you; this voice will never try to hurt you. God never abandons us and so we are never helpless. If we have the God of all creation on our side, we can do anything.
